天鼎穴最早记载于古代中医经典《针灸甲乙经》，在另一部著作《铜人腧穴针灸图经》中也有收录。
《针灸甲乙经》记载：这个穴位能缓解突然失声、呼吸不畅（像有东西堵住气道），喉咙肿痛导致呼吸和吞咽困难等症状。
《铜人腧穴针灸图经》记载：对于咽喉肿胀影响呼吸，以及喉咙发出异常声响（如喘鸣音）的情况有帮助。
《针灸甲乙经》：“天鼎，主咽肿，喉痹，失音。”
《针灸大成》：“治喉痛，颈项强急。”
